Space Wolves Reclamation Project 01

When I first took the plunge into a Space Wolves army, I decided to try to paint them to the GW color scheme. In this effort, I painter up a number of vehicles, Dreds, and terminators. And I tried to do a fine line highlight on them, which worked from 3ft away but felt chunky and clumsy up close.

Over time, I decided to just paint them the way I wanted to paint them, which resulted in the work I did for the 2013 Hobby Progress Challege put on by the Independent Characters Podcast.

But that left me with a mixed force of blue space wolves and proper members of the Rout done up in grey.  And I've always wanted to address that issue and get them properly painted up.

So... My test model, before and after.  This is just a quick Vallejo London Grey with Nuln Oil, and then a touch up to some heretofore neglected Metallica, and an Agrathax wash for his face.

Nothing special, but it gets him where he needs to be ...all in just 20 minutes.

He could still use some highlights, but the grey scheme makes him much less cartoonish.

Some older stuff...

I got a light box on EBay.  It's not the best, but it does have me reshooting some of my older work where the backdrops I used were less than complementary.

Loyalist Iron Warrior

This model has long been a favorite of mine, but I didn't want to paint him up as an Imperial Fist.

I deliberately hacked off the crux terminatus from his shoulder and threw on some rust over black to highlight where his legion icon was deliberately (but crude) taken off.

As for the mace, I see its green tones as some sort of Xenos weapon 'counts as' for a power weapon.

Sons of Horus Runes

When I set out to paint my SOH Dred, I realized I couldn't find any online.

So I compiled the below based on Books 1 & 2 from FW (Betrayal and Massacre).

The Lord of Iron 04

All done!

Sons of Horus Knight

Finally built my Imperial Knight... decided to go all in on the color scheme and make him a dedicated choice for the SOH army I'm doing.

The Lord of Iron 03

Base is done. Went for a mix of damage and covered in the dust of a dead city.

The Lord of Iron 02

Read did the shoulder Paul driven with a dark red because the other blue was simply too bright.

And started doing the damage and weathering to the body of the knight itself

The Lord of Iron

Am indulging my Hobby ADD to take some time for Perterabo. The challenge will be not overwhelming his dull tones with the blue of the Knights shoulder pauldron.

I started with Prussian Blue -- but then used too much white in the mix for highlighting. Hopefully a blue wash will tone it down a bit.

My favorite detail -- the slain Knight Pilot.

Sons of Horus Project - Contemptor Drednaught

Finished him last night. Lot of blending re the Sea Foam, still learning the right mix on broad flat panels.  And Cthonian runes are a free hand challenge for me.  I am, however quite pleased with the dirt effects on his feet.

But 'Done' is the best color of all, and now I can move on to the terminator consul and tactical squad.

Sons of Horus project

I started working up some Sons of Horus. Having done the test models, I've got a good handle on the color scheme I want to go with, and have plenty of examples from the FW color plates in Books 1 & 2.

Roughing out a full tatical squad and the Legion HQ.

Taken from an Istvaan III color scheme. Very much a WIP still but the color contrast is interesting to me.

My original test model - soon to become a Legion champion.

Resuming Operations ...

After a good year of dormancy I'm slowly coming back to life with my hobby.  New work station set up ... and it's letting me get [re]started on some projects -- notably a deep dive into the Horus Heresy range via my Calth boxed sets and those 40K minis that I can bring over to the 30K range.

Nearly finished SOH sergeant - used Vallejo's USMC Tanker Green for it with a Cathonian Camoshade wash -- think I'm going for a straight Nuln Oil from here on out.

WIP -- A CSM sorcerer rendered in Thousand Sons colors.  These models are basically devoid of any identifiable Chaos iconography, so they translate well ... though the backpack is a bit much .... I may take it off.
